My Background

My name is Jill Hamilton and I have been a learning support teacher specifically in the area of literacy for thirty years. Initially I worked in the Department of Education as a primary teacher and then retrained as an early childhood teacher. I worked in Brisbane and later as an advisory teacher for pre-schools in rural areas west of Brisbane.

After having children of my own, I worked in the independent sector of education in both primary and learning support at St Aidan’s and later, at its sister school. I have also worked at Let’s Talk, an outreach centre for Glenleighden (now known as Mancell College), which supports children with language disorder. During the latter part of my school-based career, I worked at Brisbane Boys’ College in learning support. I have tertiary qualifications in pre-school education, primary teaching and in learning support (please see below). I have also been nominated twice for a National Excellence in Teaching Award. I now run Reading Mates, providing individual, specialist support and intervention for children with literacy difficulties, in particular, dyslexia. I also write books for children to read.

My qualifications

  • Master of Educational Studies (Learning Support), University of Qld
  • Diploma of Teaching (Primary), Griffith University
  • Certificate in Early Childhood Education, Brisbane Kindergarten Teacher’s College
  • Professional Organisations - Member of Learning Difficulties Australia (LDA) - Member of SPELD, QLD
